Sunsets in the Thai capitol can almost transform the city, but observing them from atop some of the highest Bangkok restaurants and bars takes things to a whole new level.

Here we explore the best rooftops to wine and dine on, but fair warning: once you check them out yourself, you’ll never see the city the same way again.

Sirocco and Sky Bar

Named for the hot Mediterranean wind that comes from the Sahara, Sirocco’s position 63 floors over Bangkok lets diners experience the same breezes just with better views, making the venue well known enough in the city to be included in the recently Hollywood film “Hangover II”.

Perched on the top of lebua at State Tower, Sirocco is the world’s highest al fresco restaurant.

The venue offers diners views of the Chao Phraya River alongside its live jazz band and staple Mediterranean fare, including the popular seafood bisque and wagyu beef burger with seared foie gras.

Stick around after dinner and join fellow tipplers at Sky Bar at the front of the venue.

Vertigo and Moon Bar

Located on the rooftop of 61-storey Banyan Tree Bangkok, Vertigo has a 360-degree view of the city. Its décor is exactly what you’d expect of one of the area’s trendiest restaurants: minimalist design, stainless steel cutlery, funky music playing in the background and a general avant-garde ambience.

Diners can choose between an a la carte menu and four-course and five-course set diners before moving upstairs to the al fresco Moon Bar.

Long Table

True to its name, this restaurant’s main design feature alongside its contemporary art collection is a 25-metre long table.

Located on the 25th floor of Column Building, Long Table puts its serving space to good use, offering up Thai fusion fare including tuna and octopus cappuccino with sesame vinaigrette, roasted rice and chickpea salsa, grilled wagyu sirloin with spicy sauce and onion rings and lamb wok fried with holy basil and mushroom ka prao.

After dinner, diners can continue to chill out on the terrace with well-crafted cocktail and view of Sukhumvit Road ahead.

The Nest

The Nest offers a stylish and comfortable urban oasis for conversation, dining and partying. The chairs are designed like bird’s nest. Fair warning: the hammock-like seats are perfect for curling up and relaxing in, so make sure you get out before closing.

The menu serves Asian-European fusion dishes and on weekends hosts some of the city’s best parties including the monthly MODE events (event second Saturday) and the Miami party (the last Saturday of the month), both series offering a slightly different slant on the concept of a chill weekend afternoon.

The Nest, 9/F, LeFenix Hotel, Sukhumvit 11, ??????? ???????????????? ???????? 11, Monday - Saturday, 5pm – 2am, Sunday, 5pm – 1am, +66 (0)2 255 0638, www.nestbangkok.com

amBar

amBar evokes a distinctive Middle Eastern ambience, offering rooftop seekers a mix of modern comfortable seating, couches and day beds to create the perfect atmosphere for watching the sun set or lounging the night away.

The menu offers both Western and Eastern cuisine ranging from Thai favourites such as yam kor moo yang to rustic Italian bruschetta. The bar serves a full range of cocktails, beer, wine, soft drinks, coffees, teas and tapas. The signature drinks are amBartini and Kiss of the Night, and happy hour runs from midnight till closing every night.

amBar’s relaxed environs make it the place for a range of events from product launches to fashion shows.
